I have been busy the last 2 years building a carputer on my own.....I use a notebook, and attached a 12\" touchscreen to it and mounted it on my dashboard. I don`t have any car-controlls on it yet, but everything runs like a home device. I even have internet.
Your site looks really cool, keep on doing the work you do!

greetings from The Netherlands.!

Great idea. We\'re building a 350#/2 place/hybrid EV called the ElectriLite (http://www.mcn.org/a/omni/EliteSView401.jpg) that will use a mini itx box with a das/pwr switch card to run the enire electrical/performance system.

 #807 Sunny
Oh well, too bad you don\'t support Lexus

 #806 Cyberchuck
Nice site, kewl idea(s) ... but please fix the PHP! There are a coupla links that are broken badly (some sort of include problem) such as the link for the wireless keyboard on the first page.

Any HUD (meaning see through) displays yet?

 #805 Ryan
I love what I\'ve seen so far of your stuff. I use mini itx boards in portable computers and am working on one for my car as well. This software would come in handy in my car project too and would definately catch attention in my friends as well. The hardware you have linked will come in handy and I am very very interested in the DSSC too. Keep up the good work.

 #804 simsam

I would like to see your set up and if you have time this summer (2004) maybe you can stop by my garage and give me a hand! Keep up the cool work! (You should start a new class at NOPI Nationals next Sept!)

 #792 Tina Bergeron
I am very proud of you my Son!

 #790 JT
AARGH!
I independantly thought of this exact product. I didn\'t know it existed.
I would\'ve gone the same direction, possibly used a PocketPC as the guts, Linux is perfect for this type of application though.
Great job.

 #789 altraqua
You are incredibly mad!
Compliments!f

 #788 XtReMaTriX (website)
I think you have done an awesome job with your car! I have been wanting to do this for a while now and I just got a Jetta a few months ago... I am planning on doing most of what you have done but doing it a little differently... I still need access to most of my trunk so I am working on making a compact PC and use a PCI Riser Cards... I would like to know where you got your Wireless Antenna though... :)

Once again GREAT JOB! your car looks amazing!!!

I think it great that this website slows down performance for users using non-W3C browsers.
Keep up the good work!

Check out mine. Let me know what you think. I REALLY need to do the Casetronic w/ Via 800 m-itx for a perminate install. Will do in about two weeks. I\'m going to try to mount everything in the glovebox area...should be fun...Great site!!

 #773 Mikael Engdahl
1. This site does NOT comply to W3C standards.
2. Opera is too a proprietary browser.
3. IE is more standards compliant than Opera or Konqueror.
4. Beeing standards compliant has nothing to do with beeing proprietary.
5. The point of complying to standards when building websites is to make them more accessible, not more inaccessible...

 #772 Stig-Evert
Start using W3C compliant HTML before blocking non W3C compliant browsers!

 #771 soda
totaly nice to serve the pages as it should to w3c compliant browsers!! i looked but couldnt find the source of how you add a couple of secs for the servement to noncompliant browsers?
could use this on my site.

cool modification :)

 #770 Jason
Incredible installation, one of, if not the best I\'ve ever seen. Very much looking forward to the shutdown circuit. It\'s EXACTLY what I\'ve been looking for!

 #769 Mike Swankhouse
Hey isnt that a pic of projectX on the \"features\" page? Or do you also have a nice Jetta coupe?

Just noticed that.. Great site. Played Some SOFII with you while back.

I like this creation and ideas.

But where I live have many {bad-boys} and {big eyes}. Here, dont have this accessories.

Congratulations !

 #766 Humanfuse
Very cool car/site. I plan to steal some of your ideas.

I have been into my truck PC for about 5 years. Started with an old Magellan GPS and a Pent 100 notebook. It has grown to the latest, a 1.8Ghz Intel desktop/60G HD running on a 1.5kW inverter. There is a 17 inch NEC LCD desktop monitor mounted on a homemade monitor lift track, it recesses to get access to the radio and HVAC controls. I have a ATI TV capable tuner/video card, internet through my verizon cell phone (qnc is slow but better that nothing), Gyration wireless key board/ mouse, film reader, APRS through my 70cm amateur radio, GPS III+ for nav data, and backup usb camera.

Currently I am working on my start up/ shut down circuit. I run Big Brother\'s Win 2000 because it can be hard shutdown/started using the inverter\'s remote power button. I have the PC bios set for \"return to last state after power loss\". I have to hit the inverter\'s on/off button when I want to boot. Crud, but it works well. I like your remote car start idea. I want to get to the point where the acc. line starts the inverter. I think I could install a remote car starter and get the some thing you have with out needing a basic stamp. Am I missing something?

Keep up the good work. I have BM?ed your site. :-)

I\'m really hurt that Chris took down my post (meow99) asking for a ride in his car. What\'s a kitty to do?

 #764 mike hanulec (website)
i like the dashpc BUT are there any UNIX people out there that would like to see a more native, console based environment? i could see using that sun visor type screen as a unix console.

 #763 RR (website)
Man this stuff is really cool. I am going to try this to my car and I hope to keep the cost down.

Just keep up the good work.

Rock - On

 #762 Fahad
WOW!!! Great site. Great implementation! I have been wanting to do this for so long but financial and time constraints have been prohibitive. Things that you might want to consider, For the GPS, Mapopolis has a product being released this month called ClearRoute, which is a paid service (AHHH) that incorporates GPS coordinates with live traffic updates ad re-routes you to avoid it. If you have a WiFi or cellular link (Sprint is selling a CF cellular modem) might consider bringing in live traffic cams based on your geo reference taken from the GPS. The same applies for weather. Insatlling a Happauge TV card with a $100 HDTV antenna will do wonders. Wardriving with Kismet and storing the points on the GPS map database and then allowing the system to switch between Cellular and WiFi would be Damn Cool. Anyways that is what i am looking to do, but i am not a programmer i am a defense engineer that gets to play with a lot of cool toys. Look froward to visiting your site very often.

Thanks for sharing this. I think the ideal car for you (and anyone else that likes the idea) will be a hybrid like the Prius. No startup problem, and you already have an LCD screen in the dash.

First i must give you a big compliment for this great work.
i got an idea like yours anytime last year, and have started immediately to getting the hardware.
by searching the web i\'ve found your side and have seen that i\'m not the only one that has such maniac thoughts. :-)
i don\'t have any expirience with linux so is must build my project with ms, please be not disappointed. but i\'ve no chance to get it work under linux. but your side is a good artwork for me.
i also belief that VW ROCKS. :-)

good work. Chris

nice site

 #744 Seminole
I\'ve been looking high and low for ideas on how to do this. I\'ve been a geek for a while and have finally converted to Linux for all my computing needs. Even games! No more M$ for me. I have seen several simple systems using little 16x2 displays (like the one above your mirror) but not too many where they actually incorporated a touch LCD. That is the way I want to go and it\'s nice to see that someone has accomplished it. I saw the touch panel program at freshmeat and started to drool but I think you are the only person that has a site devoted to it\'s use in a setup like this. I think I\'ll be doing mostly MP3 and later GPS but it would also be nice to get a PS Emulator, DVD, and regular media player mplayer or xine. I\'m looking around for the LCD at this time. Hopefully I can find one for less than 800 bucks. :)

Wireless LAN would be great too. Have you gotten into just driving around and getting into other networks? Like the Pringles can guys?

Good to see that license plate! GO NOLES in 2003!

Looks really excellent. I\'ve been playing with the idea of integrating some computer in my car, but I see you\'ve already done it all... Looking forwards to trying it out with an old laptop in my car!
BTW... I\'m planning on using WiFi to enable file uploads whenever I\'m close to home. Hope I can get something like that running in not to much time.

Keep up the excelent work!

 #733 James Yong
YO!! I\'m 16m from Singapore, and of all the car MP3 players i\'\'ve seen so far I think yours is currently the best!!! I\'ve yet to know how to write programs in linux, but I know its a far better OS than Windows...
Well, the parts seem rather expensive (especially the small LCDs)
Anyway, good luck on your success for this project!

 #642 Auzy (website)
Nice work ;) I\'m considering building one now, and pay no attention to the guy 2 entries ago, his obviously just another moron.... But the spam links should really go, I doubt u really make much money anyway off it, I suggest u use a paypal donation link instead ;)

Just freakin\' sweet! Thank you for sharing details of your project with us. Just too cool. Very stylish. Best wishes.

 #541 Steve
As if you haven\'t heard it enough by now... absolutely stunning job. I\'m collecting ideas for an in-car MP3 system that integrates APRS from ham radio, Kismet 802.11 sniffing, and my Garmin StreetPilot 3. (The Kismet will help keeping the weather page updated :) )

I was keeping cajun.sourceforge.net at the top of my mind until this! I know the Kenwood 5\" touch screens are about $500-$800. Are these less expensive?

 #524 Gary Watts (website)
Man, do you have any suggestions for others that want to do this???

Thx,
Gary

I just found you on the net by accident, and I am impressed! I like to see someone else who enjoys computers, cars, and Nine Inch Nails! Nice Job on the ride.

 #473 GhzGirl
It was good to meet you and the gang last weekend in Nashville! I really liked the DashPC concept. Good luck with this great idea!!

 #459 anonymous
Thanks for bringing your car to Phreaknic. It\'ll probably be a year before I can get started on mine, but at least now I have some more good ideas.

 #451 fred
enjoyed seeing your jetta at phreaknic this weekend. Many thanks for taking the time to explain your project and inspire others. It was very cold and your efforts are much appreciated. Will check back often.

 #444 Walter Hooper
This is amazing! I hope you get the Zaurus running with it the near future, but I would think that running a program like TightVNC would be a bit slow and not as reliable as writing a program to interface between the two. I\'m not sure how complicated it would be though...... Luckily I found your site before I started building the power control system for the computer I\'m putting in my car. I didn\'t even think of using the Basic Stamp 2SX I had to control it. One question though, bo you have an external 802.11b antenna? Too bad I cant make it up to Nashville this weekend to see your set up sense it only three hours or so from here.

 #414 Alex (website)
Look at ebay, there is a great offer of many cheep displays.

 #408 Leif Madsen
Very nice Jetta. I am going to forward this to a buddy of mine who is obsessed with Jetta\'s. It\'s wierd that I was thinking of doing something very similer, and stumbled across this. I am currently driving a 1984 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. The only problem I am having, is the cost of the screens. Damnit, if there was only a cheap way of stealing a screen off of a laptop. If anyone happens to know, email me at slocate@hotmail.com

Thanks.

 #349 Washu
Also on a hud I would try and make a projection type heads up display on the windsheild like what a late model cadilac has.

 #348 Washu
I'm implamenting a similair setup in a somewhat modified 90 Trans am engine has been modified to give 405 hp no nitrous or any forced induction yet is still fully streetable.
0-60 in under 4seconds 1/4 mile 12.8 topspeed 175.
Project s include getting engine data from the acell DFI unit and maybe add a display for remaining NOS when I add nitrous to the car.
Right now I have an iopener running win95 but I may be replacing this with a Shuttle SV-24 mini PC equipted with a radeon PCI display or a repackaged gateway P3 1GHz notebook..Ill be running slackware 8.1 on the hardware.

 #340 omnipotent
This is sweeet!!!

I have a friend that did a similar (however inferior) setup on a windoze platform. He did it in an Acura Integra. He took the engine one step further, he implemented an engine management solution as well. Allowing him read/write access to the cars CPU. He's been know to blow a late model Camaro off the line with a quick tweek of the VTEC at the last minute.

I drive and am fond of Jetta's, keep up the good work!

 #194 Dave
NICE. I'm speechless man. I've been in the planning stages of something similiar, but you've taken it to the extreme! Betcha can't wait for a cellular based internet connection! That would pave the way for a lowjack type of car retrieval system.

 #183 A Brownlee
Finally, I found a page dealing with what I want to do... And he does a good job! I am doing a resto/pimpin of a 1979 lincoln. So if you guys have suggestions far as more screens, cool.

Re wireless performance...

Hewlett Packard produces a chip with
approx 26 dB gain up to 6 Ghz.

The SETI Leage people have drawings and info on it. This increases the reception ONLY! You are not allowed to amplify the output pwr - BUT...
You can find it in the UK, cheap, meant for amplifying amateur radio satellite communication on 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz.

Mail me for more info...

Cheers / Dana

very nice setup. given any thoughts to a wireless ethernet setup? im planning a similiar setup as yours (no gps, windows, etc, just mp3 + LCD) but i want to make it wireless (remote WOL etc). your setup is cool, and so is the car :)

I saw your page linked from the forums on VWVortex.com, your car is really sweet... Anyways check out the site if you want to chat with some VW enthusiasts, peace.... -Henry (golf IV/jetta IV moderator)

This is an interesting project, but the software system is demented; using Windows 98 for a car doesnt make any sense. Chances are that you do very little writing of data to the hard disks. You could probably use the entire hard disk as read-only.

 #90 moahidb (website)
Nice work man...thats an awesome looking install.

 #89 Nichole (website)
Youre brilliant as always!

 #88 Tech^Cellfish (website)
Woha! Nice setup. I mounted my carputer yesterday. Keypad, casette adapter, no LCD yet (ebaying at the time).. When I saw your setup I want to throw away my system and get one like yours!!! Your car is very NICE! Two lcds :)

 #87 Kinnish
Dude, When do you use the headsup gear, that was my idea to use one of those in my car as well. Setup looks great , Im super impressed , looking forward to improvements. Email me with details on headsup gear

 #83 StarrWulfe (website)

 #82 Matt
Beautiful car! awesomeness. Im just curious how much that set you back? but non the less, awesomely cool. love the car... great inspiration for my try

 #81 L Dub
My system design is some what like yours, my question is can I configure the BS2 to my individual start up time; as my system will boot in 15 sec

 #80 Alexandre (website)
Hi, Great car... but... I think you have much money and hardware... and poor software... why you dont try AutoMedia Car 2002? go to http://www.mp3car.com/UserSites/AlexGuim

 #79 Greg
Nice car, in California though you could not have the LCD up front figures huh .. Too bad Linux doesnt have all the programs that you can need to use so you can dump windows that you hate .. Kind of like hating gasoline but ya need it ..

 #78 Andrew
Sweet For the future you definitely have to put in a second computer. Then you have to network them so you can deathmatch at a stoplight. With me. Because I am damn jealous of your sweet ride.

 #77 Baud Barf  (website)
This might sound like Im missing the point but..... ....were those blue/red instrument panels aftermarket, if so where do you get them? Thanks - and yes, your car kicks large quantities of fat, unrefined ass.

 #76 Elmer
I checked ELos site and didnt see a 6.4 TFT touchscreen. Did you inquire directly or do they not have it available anymore? Great setup!

 #75 Jason
Great Setup. I wish I had the time and money to set that up in my 98 Jetta GLX. The Console is tight on mine. I dont think I really could fit anything near that big in there. So, Im thinking of taking the easy way out and getting the Neo Car Jukebox Ki

 #74 Erwin
Nice car buddy, its the dream of every man on earth. Some auto-check system would be great, and extra speakers, amplifiers, and... you known. Again, congratulations, thats a new age collectors piece. Where did you got those LCD and screens? please!!!

You can replace your gps receiver antenna w/ an OEM. Its avail in Germany and the rest of Europe. It looks like a puck and other vw owners will notice it :) http://cgi.ebay.de/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1654831085

 #66 chris  (website)
pure 0wnage, man. you rule. seriously.

 #65 Moe
Have multiple cams. one for each blind spot and the rear view, but place the output above your head in windscreen. That way, you dont have to crane your head around much to get info on your blind spots! Maybe even one aimed at each rear passenger? Easier

 #64 jay
Never thought about commercializing this stuff ? I think it could work !!

 #63 Mark  (website)
Have you ever thought about doing this commercially? If you could perfect a kit, there would be some serious $$$ in it!

 #62 shivvr
ur fucking car is awesome i love jettas and have been thinking bout ur idea its saweet!!!

 #61 Ben Babcock (website)
Cool car. You should consider integrating speech recognition/synthesis into your vehicle. You could sit down and say email and your computer could dig up your email messages and start reading them to you.

 #60 Gork
Cool car. Never thought of running VMware for the navigation since most of the software out there is Windows only. Very ingenious. One idea for your X10 camera....safety. I mean, mount it in your cars blind spot that way you have full 360 view around your

 #59 J. P.
Very nice. If I only had $$$.... Yeah. What is the HUD all about?

 #58 weso  (website)
It cool to see Linux in a car instead of M$. Even though it uses NT have you seen www.MegaCar.com?

 #57 Scott M.
This is great, a truley sweet ride. Suggestions would be wait until the 802.11a standard is finalized before adding wireless, so you can have more then 11mbps connections. Another nice thing would be a remote boot, Parallax now makes a keychain rf device.

 #56 Chris (website)
Great setup, if I were old enough to drive, Id set one up myself!

 #55 Paul  (website)
Wow, impressive! Well done.

 #54 Jacob
Cool setup.

 #53 Mike (website)
How about some photos of the guts of the system? Id like to see how you mounted the computer in the car and maybe how you ran the wires and stuff.

 #52 Jay
Very sweet...would like to do the same to my B5

 #51 TEN
Awesome!

 #50 Oskari Niitamo from Finland
Hey this is one of the coolest mod projects ive seen cos you actually managed to do all that crazy stuff and WITHOUT wires running all over the place, or making the car seem quasi futuristic. Great job, how much did ya spend BTW.

 #49 Matt Campbell
pretty kool, thinking about doing one for myself after 12 in the mobile a/v electronics.

 #48 Pdawg
Sweeet

 #47 Tim
Dude, youve done what Ive wanted to do for a while. Ill hafta sacrifice my laptop soon! Suggestion: mount a camera to the right front finder to see around transports, and one backwards for rearview!

 #46 Kenton  (website)
Love it! Gives me an idea for our minivan. If only the wife will buy off on it.....

 #45 ‹@“®Dm  (website)
Did you have trouble looking for map/gps software for linux? I think some exist on freshmeat that I have seen some time before.

 #44 Brent
too cool, look into a night vision camera to the front display, heck a multi-freq cam/recevier to pick up all wavelengths and view them, good for eluding radar.

 #43 Charles
most excellent site and system congrats to the creator

 #42 Art (website)
Cool - Im there dude.

 #40 Drivn EZ

 #38 Mick
Great work! When are you going to finally forsake the instument cluster and go with a complete virtual job? Just imagine-- on the fly you could change skins to equate with passengers/driving style etc. True inspiration!

 #33 Sverre
I bow in respect ;-). Thats a really nice setup youve created there - I really like the combination of computer and good ol craftmanship in the interior design. Way to go.

 #32 anonymous
Very nice job. Looks like a factory option. One question: who makes your touchscreen lcd?

Yeah, I know, its warm in Florida... but in the White Hell (Finland) its sometimes -25C (-13F) or less. I dont know how touchTFTs react in freezing conditions, but Im pretty sure that those things will say their contract off when going under -10C (14F

 #28 Ron Orr
You could add a second battery and an isolator as used in RVs so that the 2nd battery would be charged by the VWs alternator the computer runs off of the 2nd battery only and does not draw down the primary battery so you can always start the car. As to a

Nice job on the install... looks very clean. One peice of advice! IF YOU WANT A STABLE AND REALIABLE CAR DUMP THAT SHITTY DIST OF REDHAT AND GET WITH SLACKWARE!!!! Once you go slack you never go back! Btw your code looks pretty decent...gtk is a bitch.

 #18 Krusty  (website)
Hey that is sweet! I wanna learn how to do that! Put the camera pionting at your feet. It is an interesting and hidden. People can watch you heel-toe and rev match. Or is it an auto? I didnt look.

 #17 Bloodsplatters
You need a fuel cell to power that bad boy!

 #16 Jorg  (website)
Okay, I cant believe you did this to your car. I feel pretty divided on it: at one side what you did is really cool and the finition looks excellent, but on the other side I really do not like modded cars (even interior).

 #15 Timm Stokke (website)
VERY Nice work! The way its set up makes me want to do something like that.. after I get a car. Well, that, and a drivers lisence ;) Just one quick question, though: I might have missed this somewhere, but how do you keep the thing running on car battery?

 #14 John
Nice setup... now, if you *really* want to make it (almost) *all* Linux, replace the dash as well with a PC running Linux, and displaying the cars vitals as well. *THAT* would be even more impressive than this, an this was damned impressive!! Good luck!

 #13 [H]ard | On
Nice work man, I hope to get my entertainment under way here soon. The touch sensitive TFT is awesome, i didnt know they had those :D i guess ill have to use one of those...

nice car and install. Im hoping to get round to doing my BMW 325i very soon. I might need some help!!

 #7 Mark McCurdy (website)
I am working on the feasibility of integrating all
of the fun features of entertainment to add
to my BMW shown in the above URL. It will be
expensive, but almost free compared to buying
commercial products doing similar things.
